Pianos, as a whole, can be a pretty costly investment. They often range into the double digits of thousands for even some of the lower end models.

There seem to be manufacturers that have both an “economy” line of pianos that it would be easier for an average, middle class family to afford as well as a range of higher end pianos designed for the more serious player. Though the most sought after pianos, and those often mentioned as the favorites of more experienced players come from manufacturers that exclusively craft high end, very expensive instruments.

Having your piano tuned is definitely the single most important part of the instrument’s maintenance, but unfortunately, very few piano owners follow a reasonable schedule when it comes to having their pianos tuned. Piano owners often think that they can go years between tunings and everything will be fine, or that they can try to replace a professional tuning by subscribing to some myth or old wives tale (like keeping jars of water in their piano), but this simply isn’t the case. To truly get the most out of your piano, it needs to be taken care of by a professional, and with regularity.

The X Factor has become very favourite in the UK with millions of viewers glued to their television sets every Saturday evening whilst the series lasts. Some watch the talent show because they want to have a laugh at the awful auditions, some watch because they want to see new performers do well.

Personally I feel uncomfortable watching some of the really awful auditions. I hate it when the panel (Simon Cowell, Danni Minogue, Louis Walsh and Cheryl Cole) laugh inanely at the efforts of others. I don’t find singers trying their hardest to impress funny, just depressing when they clearly can’t sing. Neither can I, but like those poor singers I wish that I could sing. I’ve got to admit to laughing at the effect scary Ariel Burdett had on the panel during her audition.

Getting the Gig

I auditioned for an agency that came to Berklee. The audition consisted of playing a medium tempo talking groove, a ballad w/brushes, samba, bossa nova, rhumba, and then playing along to big band charts w/music minus drums and a click track. The emphasis was on good time keeping and chart reading.
